Speech and language therapy intervention for an individual with eating, drinking and swallowing disorders at SLT UK is highly beneficial. Following an assessment with one of our specialist speech and language therapists, the individual will have identified their eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties where the speech and language therapist will have created goals based on their specific needs.
What will intervention include for eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties?
Our specialist speech and language therapists provide intervention that is evidence based for eating, drinking and swallowing disorders and may include:
Modifying diets
The speech and language therapist may recommend the safest consistencies for swallowing which may include softer foods or thicker fluids.
Techniques or exercises
An exercise may be recommended to improve the efficiency of the individuals swallow, for example, changes to posture.
Environmental changes
Changes to when and where the individual has their meals and drinks may be advised, for example, when the individual is more awake.
Alternative feeding methods
It may be advised in more severe cases alternative feeding methods when the speech and language therapist feels the individual is at risk when eating or drinking orally.
Advice, information and support
Helping the individual to understand their difficulties and the reasons for the recommendations.
Training
Providing information about eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties and their best management for the individual, carers or family members.
The type of treatment options recommended to the individual will be based on their specific needs and will be discussed with them and their family members or carers during the assessment.
